The area marked 1 is the toolbar. Toolbar buttons are enabled or disabled as appropriate, so not all are available at all times. To see a description of each button's function. move your mouse pointer over the buttons and look for the description at bottom right in the area marked 5.
The area marked 2 is running commentary, telling you what is going on. Remarks or text generated by Hefty are preceded by "*". Commands sent by Hefty to the remote FTP server ( we'll get there soon! ) are preceded by a ">" while server responses are shown with a "<".
Area 3 is for your Mac's volumes, files and folders. To change volume, select the new volume from the popup menu on the left. To move around folders, double-click on them in the file/folder listing, or double-click the "up-arrow" icon at the top of the listing to move up a folder. To go to a folder you have already been to on a particular volume, select it from the second popup menu showing the folders you have opened.
Play around a bit and you will get the hang of it ;)
Area 4 is for the files and folders on the remote server. It works in a similar fashion to your local file list.
The area marked 5 is help/feedback information. It shows you various items of information, including the number of local and remote files, the number of bytes received from the remote server, and button/progress descriptions. Keep an eye on this to help see what is going on.
Don't worry about areas 6 and 7 at this stage - you can read about them in the main documentation when you are more familiar with the program.
In the next section we will look at connecting to an FTP server.
